Bass Guitars for Sale

The bass guitar is most commonly an electric instrument (although acoustic versions do exist they are not as popular) and it can be played in a variety of ways such as plucking, slapping, popping, tapping or simply using a plectrum. To the untrained eye this version of the guitar looks similar in appearence and construction to the standard electric six string but with a larger body and longer neck, however many other more subtle variations will not escape the notice of any musician. The bass guitar features a longer scale length, and also generally four strings (although anything from five up to twenty string versions are available) and usually these four strings on the bass guitar are tunred to the same pitches as the double bass, or in laymans terms one octave lower than the strings of the standard guitar (E, A, D, and G). This type of guitar is a more recent invention than its six string cousin and only really rose to prominence in the 1950's.

Prior to the invention of the bass guitar the double bass was usually played in a plucked fashion in popular music, however it was quickly replaced by the new electric guitar version of the instrument as it allowed far more versatility and flexibility and the instrument has grown in popularity ever since. Currently this unique style of guitar provides the low-pitched basslines and bass runs in most styles of music from blues, jazz, rock, pop and metal. It is also commonly found in fusion, latin and funk music. The first bass guitar to be played in the "horizontal" style we associate with the instrument was invented by Paul Tutmarc in the 1930's, his "electronic bass fiddle," was a four stringed, solid bodied, fretted electric bass guitar with a 30 ½" scale length. It was not until the 1950's when Leo Fender developed the first mass produced electric bass that the future began to look bright for the instrument; the Fender Precision Bass has become a widely copied industry standard ever since.
