Charvel Guitar Shops
Charvel are a company with a long and prestigious history that dates back to 1978 when Wayne Charvel sold his guitar repair company to Grover Jackson. It was Jackson who pushed the company to success when he began constructing electric guitars to supplement the repair side of the business. Jackson was introduced to Randy Rhoads in 1980 and the two individuals worked together to design a unique, angular, through neck guitar. This guitar was sold under the Jackson name as Grover was unsure about putting the Charvel name on the instrument in case it did not sell well, so Charvel are also directly responsible for the construction of Jackson.
Grover Jackson moved his production to Glendora, California for a number of years before the company finally moved to Ontario CA in 1986. The Charvel and Jackson companies ended up being sold to AMIC in Japan in 1989 where they continued to be developed until 1991. It was in the late 80's when Charvel really made its mark with a number of their designs proving to be exceptionally popular. When grune appeared in the early 90's it looked set to kill of the success of Charvel and the name passed on to be used for budget instruments.
In 2002 Fender purchased Charvel and Jackson and pushed both names into a new era of success. Several old lines were re-born and the US made instruments proved to be highly sought after with professionals and amateurs alike. The company offers a number of custom built services for the discerning guitarist. There is no denying that Charvel are set to continue with their recent successes as more and more players are adopting the instrument every day.
