Guitar Effects and Pedals
Guitar effects and pedals are used to alter the tone, pitch and sound of an electric guitar. They tend to be based either in the amplifier itself or they work in between the guitar and the amplifier and alter the signal the amp recieves from the guitar. Guitar effects and pedals can be simple consisting of one pedal right through to expensive rackmounted systems or even amp simulation software. Guitar effects and pedals and signal processing form an important
part of the electric tone used in many genres, such as rock, pop, blues, and metal. Effects and pedals are also used with other instruments in rock, pop,
blues, and metal, such as electronic keyboards and synthesizers. Electric bass players use bass effects, which are designed to work with low-frequency tones of the bass. There are a huge number of different effects and pedals on the market to choose from. The most common focuses on distortion, this is an important part of the guitars sound in many genres and this type of effect will distort the waveform recieved from the instrument by clipping the signal before sending it to the amp. Another very commonly used type of guitar effects and pedals are based on the phase shifter. This device creates a complex waveform coming from the instrument by mixing a copy of the signal with the original signal but playing the two out of phase with each other. This creates a distinctive "whooshing" sound. The Wah effect is also very commonly seen in many performers bank of guitar effects and pedals; it is a band pass filter that only allows a small amount of the signals frequency to be recieved by the amp. Moving the expression pedals backwards and forwards allows lower and higher frequencies through.
