Jackson Guitar Shops
Jackson are a famous more modern guitar manufacturer that have seen a lot of popularity in recent years, particularly amongst the heavy metal and rock fraternity. They produce guitars with many unique features such as seven or eight strings and a lot of their designs feature double locking tremelos for better tuning accuracy. The company was originally owned and operated by Grover Jackson, a partner of Wayne Charvel of Charvel Guitar Repair. Jackson are by far the most known for their "Rhoads" V model guitar, originally designed and used by guitarist Randy Rhoads.
Grover put his name on the Rhoads rather than the Charvel name because
he felt the design was too shocking for Charvel's regular customers.
This model inspired Grover to start the Jackson company, to produce more unique guitars. In modern times almost all Jackson (and many Charvel) guitars share the typical Gibson Explorer-like pointy drooped headstocks, originally designed by Randy Rhoads. Various models feature a reversed pointy headstock with the tip
pointing upwards. Another trademark are their so called "shark fins" fret inlays (see picture below). In 2002, Fender bought out Jackson and Charvel, and operations were moved to the Fender
factory in Corona, California. Fender is now manufacturing guitars that are
almost exactly like the original San Dimas Charvels apart from a few very minor aesthetic details. This had
short term negative consequences, as much of the artists who were on
the Jackson roster list in the 1980's and 1990's left to endorse other
guitar companies. Though things at Jackson have significantly improved since the buyout, interference by Fender is still stated to be a problem within Jackson, particularly where guitars are concerned.
Some fans see that some of the new things that Fender has instituted,
such as the fairly low prices on high end USA models and improved
quality in lower end models is only a good thing, however many argue that low end models was not what Jackson was about in the first place.
