Schecter Guitar Shops
Schecter are a relative newcomer to the guitar manufacturing scene, having only been founded in 1976. Originally the company only produced replacement parts for existing guitars however they have since expanded and produce a stunning range of both hand made custom and factory made instruments for the discerning guitarist, many of them with a distinct metal or gothic twist.
Between 1976 and 1983 Schecter only produced a very small number of whole guitars, instead focusing on supplying replacement guitar necks and bodies along with other components. Obviously with all of these components to hand it was only a matter of time before Schecter began to produce their own instruments, and in 1979 the first Schecter branded instrument went on sale.
These initial designs were considered by critics to be exceptional instruments and even though only a handful were made they cemented the reputation of the company and allowed them to expand with new lines. Their popularity increased tenfold in 1980 when Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits used a Schecter on the bands Making Movies album.
In 1983 Schecter decided that they had outgrown their small custom shop so the company was sold to a number of investors who wanted to expand the brand. When they began to mass produce instruments even these were well above quality, and Schecter became well known for producing excellent quality instruments for a wide range of budgets.
In 1987 Schecter were sold to a Japanese entrepreneur and he returned the company back to California and the company began working on a new range of guitars. Recently Schecter have begun to grow and they are slowly entering the guitarists lexicon as suppliers of high quality, durable yet affordable instruments.
