Washburn Guitar Shops
Washburn Guitars were founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1883 and as such are one of the oldest guitar manufacturers. They are reknowned for various innovations in guitar building and marketing, for example, they were the first manufacturer to use artist endorsements and build a large-bodied acoustic guitar. All of the companies guitars are hand built, although some are created in Indonesia and China. The company also has budget lines marketed as Lyon and Oscar Schmidt. Washburn Guitars played a large part in the musical movement of Chicago in the 1920's and this has shaped the companies future.
This blues movement resulted from an influx of African Americans to the area in preceeding years, this type of blues would change the way blues music was
played, and would also change rock and roll as well as helping in the success of Washburn guitars as many of the blues players would craft their own instruments by hand. The
Washburn guitar and the blues movement that it was involved with are
associated with Maxwell Street. This street is only a few blocks from
the factory, and where Washburn guitars were first embraced.
